Even then, it was no picnic. Every one of my novels
was worked over, and revised, and redrafted again and
again. My UK editor would make ten pages of suggestions.
My US editor would submit another twenty pages. My agent
would then add a further dozen. I’d take account of all of
them when writing the second draft. Then the process would
be repeated with the third draft, and so on, until the job was done.
One consequence is that, no matter how depressed you may be
feeling about your work, I bet I’ve felt the same way in the past.
I’ve been there, I’ve done that, and the T-shirt is pretty grimy by now.
I suppose what I’m saying can be boiled down to this: I understand.
