For this book, I went back to my Asian roots,
as it were, and spent a couple of months in
Singapore, researching its history. The result
was a restless tale of sexual frustration and
intrigue, closely wrapped up with the coming
Gulf War. At the heart of the story is a complex
father-daughter relationship.
"A brilliant thriller that keeps you hooked right to the very end."
-- Manchester Evening News
The story was suggested to me by a chance
remark of my daughter's. She told me that
every graveyard has a guardian ghost, the
spirit of the first person buried there, whose
duty it is to watch over and protect the other
occupants. At first I thought it would be a
horror story pure and simple, but it ended
up a lot more complex. Set in Sunny California,
it represented a radical change of scene for me.
"An outstanding psychological thriller.
It reaches a surprising climax, one of stunning
intensity that jolts like an electric shock...a wonderful read."
-- The Daily News
This was my last novel...so far! It containted
some of the charcters who had appeared in the
previous one, and it took me into some really
dark places where, on reflection, I decided
I didn't want to go. My imagination showed no
sign of weakening, but I preferred to quit while
I was ahead. It's not a decision I have ever regretted.
"X-rated version of Chandler's California, high on crack."
-- The Times
